The QETDZ is home to a wealth of famous metal rolling enterprises, including Alcoa Bohai Aluminum Co., Ltd., Qinhuangdao Shougang Plate Co., Ltd., Wan Chi Steel Pipe (Qinhuangdao) Co., Ltd., Qinhuangdao Development Zone Aluminum Alloy, Minmetals & Tianwei Steel（Qinhuangdao）, Zhongyue POSCO (Qinhuangdao) Tinplate Industrial Co., Ltd., Zhongyou BSS (Qinhuangdao) Petropipe Co., Ltd. and Shouqin Steel Processing and Distribution Center. Its local metal rolling industry revolves around core products, i.e. aluminum alloy and steel plates, and is characterized by environmental friendliness and superior production efficiency. The QETDZ is widely recognized as a major Chinese producer of top-quality heavy plates and processed aluminum products as well as the largest production base of tinplates.

II. Development advantages

1. Location and port logistics
Situated at the heart of the Bohai-Rim Economic Circle, Qinhuangdao is well-known all across the country as an important transportation center in northern China and a gateway to the Pacific for northeastern, northern and northwestern Chinese cities. To its north, across the Bohai Sea, lie Japan and South Korea, two economic powers in Asia. The city is, therefore, blessed with unique, unparalleled geographical conditions.

2. Local resources
Iron ore is found in great abundance in Qinhuangdao and its surrounding areas. In addition, the Qinhuangdao Port, as a major coal port in mainland China, guarantees, for local smelters, a reliable supply of various raw materials. As part of a strategic effort to further expand the industrial chain of the local metallurgical industry, Shou-Qin Longhui Mines Limited, a full-scale project sponsored by the Shougang Group, is currently under construction in Qinlong County, Qinhuangdao. Its annual throughput of oxidized pellets and (refined) iron powder is expected to reach 2 million tons and 1.5 million tons, respectively.

3. A fully-developed industrial chain
In recent years, the local metal rolling industry in Qinhuangdao has witnessed the formation of a fully-developed supply chain, involving iron mining and dressing, sintering, smelting and metal product processing, etc. Moreover, owing to the construction of a million-ton shipbuilding base in Shanhaiguan and the nationwide gas/petroleum pipeline network, it is predicted that local producers of heavy plates and pipeline steel products in the city will benefit greatly from an even broader market space all across China.

Ferrous metal rolling: primary emphasis should be placed on intensive processing and how to upgrade existing products; efforts shall be made to further develop pipeline and shipbuilding steel products, with the aim of improving the supply chain for shipbuilding and the production of large steel pipes, and therefore facilitating the establishment of an intensive processing base of iron/steel products.
